A reminder..
If you’re single or in a relationship, I’d bet good money that at some point along the road you have asked yourself what it would be like if you’d stayed with an ex. Usually this is a fleeting thought that never amounts to anything more. Today I had a glimpse into what my life may have looked like if I had chosen to stay with an ex-boyfriend. We’re on fair terms; we...

Alone but not single
Today is Valentine’s Day. The busiest day of the year for florists, fancy restaurants, movie theatres and hotels. Stores prepare for months for this day, decorating their space with pink, red, hearts and cupid - hoping that by Feb 14th their stock will sell out. To my joy, they don’t - and V-Day chocolate goes on sale tomorrow :) Husband is away today. He’ll be spending his...

Imagining...
Husband is away again. This time he’ll be gone over Valentine’s Day and our less celebrated 6-year dating anniversary. I wonder if he’ll remember? Will he plan a surprise? Maybe a delivery of flowers or something sweet? If he were home I think I would probably make him a breakfast like this: And some sweets like this: And a card like this: :)

Chinese New Year vs. Robbie Burns Day
Wooo! A busy week for me. Strange as it sounds, my cultural heritage is a mix of Chinese, British, Scottish, and French Canadian. This week I get the privilege of celebrating both Chinese New Year (my favourite holiday) and Robbie Burns Day! Here are some details: Chinese New Year - Chinese food, often dim sum or peking duck - green tea - known for costumes, dragons, paper lanterns - red...

Kingston CFB
It’s been awhile since I’ve tumbled… Last week Husband left for Kingston CFB. He’ll be there for 3 weeks for an infantry course. He came home over the weekend (Kingston is only 3 hours away, so at least I get weekends with him!) and declared his love for the Limestone City. He says it’s one of the only places he’s been to where the “townsfolk” truly accept the troops. The residents of Kingston...

Do you feel that Canada has officially pulled out of Afghanistan, now that Tim Hortons has announced they will be tearing down their station at Kandahar base?

The other day I was leaving the office - driving west, the sun was in my eyes and I threw on my sunnies. My commute home is about a half hour and some point along the way I started wondering why my headlights weren’t as bright as usual. My husband and I recently lost our mechanic so I began the panic, thinking ‘how much is this going to cost if we have to fix it?’ etc…...

I love you like a cupcake loves an overweight child: very similar to the mannerisms of a whole cake but personal, and minus the commitment issues, plus just the right amount of icing; not to mention the convenience of mobility, and only a smidgen of the guilt! Chocolate covered strawberry… yum!

If I could ask one thing of all Canadians for Remembrance Day, it would be this: Spare not a thought for the fallen. Think instead of those left behind, the families. All soldiers join knowing the risks, and all soldiers deploy to wars even more aware of those risks, and are willing to take them, for themselves, for the challenge, or simply because it is expected. But no family freely...

Origin of the word...
Did you know…? The word soldier entered modern English in the 14th century, from the equivalent Middle English word soudeour, from Anglo-French soudeer or soudeour, meaning mercenary, from soudee, meaning shilling’s worth or wage, from sou or soud, shilling. The word is also related to the Medieval Latin soldarius, meaning soldier (literally, “one having pay”). These words...

How soon is too soon for Christmas?
Me: I hope you know that by allowing me to hold a Christmas party you're giving me permission to decorate our house like a department store on crack.
Him: Lol
Me: Totally not joking.

Embarrassing your kids on Halloween
I don’t have kids yet.. but when I do, I so hope they look Chinese. The more of my Asian genes they get, the more likely my husband will let me dress them up like this: Crossing my fingers that I’ll get a little Chinese baby :)

Approaching Remembrance Day...
It is the VETERAN, not the preacher, who has given us freedom of religion. It is the VETERAN, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the VETERAN, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the VETERAN, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to assemble. It is the VETERAN, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. It is the VETERAN,...

Sacrifice
Today I came across a news story in the Globe & Mail about a SaR tech based out of CFB Trenton who died on a rescue mission in Igloolik, Nunavut. This story broke my heart and although I was reading through the article while at my desk at work, I wanted to take a moment to recognize that while our soldiers overseas in ‘active warzones’ receive praise and kudos for their hard work...

Can't get enough!
I’d always thought “once a bride, never a bridesmaid” was going to apply to my life, having never really been close friends with girls for most of my life. Boys always seemed to be more suitable companions for me - not really a tomboy, but never interested in the cattiness and drama that often comes with a close-knit group of girlfriends. Much to my surprise (and delight), my...

Yesterday’s entry from Neil Pasricha’s 1000 Awesome Things: #128 Whispering reviews of the movie trailers with your friends as they happen This has to be my favourite part of a movie date. It doesn’t matter who I’m with - friend, boyfriend (now husband), family, or alone and whispering to the stranger sitting next to me - I get great satisfaction from being able to judge...

Laurie. It’s nice to meet you. Here’s a little about me: I’m a newlywed, a philanthropist, a homemaker and an army spouse. I’m currently working an internship at the University of Guelph learning to become a better fundraiser and social media-ist. My life revolves around my new husband and our friends and family. I’ve been spending all my spare time lately helping...
